Pre-save

Definition

A pre-save is a link that lets a listener authorise a streaming service in advance to add an upcoming release to their library automatically on release day. It is the streaming equivalent of a pre-order and is used to concentrate first-day activity.

A pre-save works by asking a listener to connect their Spotify or Apple Music account to a third-party link, granting permission for the release to be saved to their library the moment it goes live. Apple Music calls its version pre-add. The point is timing: streaming services weight early engagement, and a batch of saves and plays in the first hours signals something to the recommendation systems that the same activity spread over a month does not.

Pre-saves only exist if the release has been delivered to stores in advance with a future release date, which ties them directly to your distributor's lead time. No delivery, no release identifier, no pre-save link.

Two honest caveats from running these myself. First, a pre-save is a permission grant, and some listeners are uncomfortable authorising an app they have never heard of to touch their library — conversion is lower than a plain link. Second, a save is not a stream. A library add with no plays behind it does very little for you, and it does nothing at all for royalties. Spotify requires a track to reach 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months before it generates recorded royalties.

The misunderstanding: treating pre-save counts as a success metric. They are a launch-day concentration tool, not an audience measure. A hundred pre-saves that produce a hundred first-week listens is a real result; a thousand pre-saves harvested from a giveaway is a number that looks good in a screenshot and moves nothing.

My own campaign experience, not a guarantee — platforms change how they weight this.
